While female condoms have been available in the United States for 16 years most people have little experience with the product, many have never seen a female condom. Education and instruction on correct use of the product are vital when successfully introducing female condoms into prevention programs. With approval of FC2 by the FDA we have an opportunity to reintroduce a more accessible product to the public, but to do this successfully we need to dispel old myths and promote the empowering and pleasurable benefits of using the FC2. FC2 is not intended as a replacement for the male condom but rather as an additional option for both women and men. Studies have shown that having female condoms available allows women and men to access more prevention options and results in an increase in protected sex acts and a decrease in STIs, including HIV/AIDS.
